Valet tipping, made simple
It’s one of the most common questions guests ask: how much should you tip a valet? The short answer is that tipping a valet is customary in the United States, and a small gratuity is a kind way to recognize good service. But the details depend on where you are and who’s hosting.
A typical tip
For everyday valet — at a restaurant, hotel, or venue where you pay for parking yourself — most people tip a few dollars when their vehicle is returned. Tipping on return rather than drop-off is common, since that’s when the valet has completed the round trip of parking and retrieving your car. If a valet goes out of their way — helping with luggage, an umbrella in the rain, or a child’s car seat — a little extra is always appreciated.
At private events
At weddings, corporate functions, and private parties, gratuity is often already handled. Many hosts choose to pre-pay the gratuity so their guests can simply hand over their keys and enjoy the event. If you see a sign that says tipping isn’t necessary, that means the host has taken care of it — and you don’t need to tip again.
When in doubt, ask
If you’re not sure whether gratuity is covered, it’s perfectly fine to ask the valet or the event host. And if you’re planning an event yourself, Epic Valet can include a no-tipping arrangement so your guests never have to think about it. Either way, a friendly thank-you always goes a long way.
